Bharat Taxi: Government’s Cooperative Ride-Hailing App to Break Ola–Uber Monopoly and Empower Drivers

The Government of India is preparing to roll out Bharat Taxi, a cooperative-driven digital mobility platform designed to free commercial vehicle drivers from heavy dependence on private ride-hailing giants such as Ola and Uber. The announcement was made by Union Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah in a written response to a question in the Lok Sabha.

Envisioned as a driver-first, transparent, and nationally rooted alternative, Bharat Taxi aims to redefine India’s ride-hailing landscape by placing ownership and control directly in the hands of drivers through a cooperative model

A Cooperative-Powered National Mobility Platform

Confirming the initiative on December 2, Amit Shah stated that Bharat Taxi will function as a cooperative-led digital mobility app focused on strengthening drivers’ earnings and autonomy. The platform will be operated by Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited, a multi-state cooperative society registered under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies (MSCS) Act, 2002.

The move follows growing concerns over drivers’ increasing reliance on private aggregators and the high commissions charged by them. By adopting a cooperative ownership structure, Bharat Taxi ensures that drivers are not just service providers but stakeholders and beneficiaries of the platform’s growth.

Smart, Safe and Inclusive Ride-Hailing Features

Bharat Taxi is being positioned as a technology-enabled yet people-centric platform. Key features of the app include:

  • Seamless mobile-based ride booking
  • Transparent and fair fare calculations
  • Real-time vehicle tracking
  • 24/7 customer support
  • Multilingual user interfaces
  • Verified and secure driver onboarding
  • Tech-driven safety features for riders and drivers

The app is also expected to promote inclusive mobility, making transportation accessible across regions and demographics.

Zero Commission, Maximum Earnings for Drivers

A defining feature of Bharat Taxi is its zero-commission model, allowing drivers to keep 100% of their ride earnings. Unlike private platforms, any surplus generated will be shared among driver-members, reinforcing financial security and collective growth.

The government has emphasized that transparent pricing will benefit passengers as well, ensuring fair fares, predictable costs, and reliable service. By removing commission-heavy structures, Bharat Taxi seeks to create a more balanced and sustainable ride-hailing ecosystem.

A Citizen-Centric Alternative to Private Aggregators

Through Bharat Taxi, the government aims to build a national, cooperative-backed mobility platform that strengthens driver livelihoods while delivering affordable, dependable transportation to citizens. The initiative reflects a broader push toward inclusive digital infrastructure, cooperative economics, and people-first technology in India’s rapidly evolving mobility sector.
