App developers looking to launch their programs in ChatGPT can now submit them for review and potential publication, OpenAI said Wednesday. The company also introduced a new app directory within Chat’s tools menu that has swiftly been dubbed an “app store.”
In October, the company announced the arrival of apps in its
chatbot, explaining that the move would bring a broader suite of capabilities
to ChatGPT users. Major platforms — including Expedia, Spotify, Zillow, and
Canva — announced integrations that would allow users to access their services
directly from Chat conversations. Now, the company is opening up the field to a
broader array of players.
“Apps extend ChatGPT conversations by bringing in new context and letting users take actions like order groceries, turn an outline into a slide deck, or search for an apartment,” the company said Wednesday.
Developer opportunities and available apps
Developers can submit their apps through the OpenAI
Developer Platform, where they will undergo review for quality and safety.
Approved apps will gradually roll out in the new year. Current offerings in the
directory include popular apps such as Spotify, Canva, DoorDash, Figma, Zillow,
Booking.com, Expedia, and Apple Music, enabling tasks like playlist creation,
project management, bookings, and shopping. OpenAI is also exploring
monetization options for apps, including digital goods, further expanding the ecosystem
for developers and users alike.
With this launch, OpenAI aims to transform ChatGPT from a conversational tool into a versatile platform, enabling seamless productivity and interactive experiences while fostering innovation through developer engagement.
In addition to the app rollout, OpenAI is investigating
monetization strategies for the applications, which may include the sale of
digital goods. Developers will need to have their applications reviewed through
the OpenAI Developer Platform, with the first batch of approved apps set to be
launched gradually in the coming new year. Apps that comply with quality and
safety standards will be eligible for publication in the app directory, and
those that resonate well with users may receive enhanced visibility in the
directory or recommendations from ChatGPT in future interactions.
Currently, notable apps available on ChatGPT include Spotify, Canva, DoorDash, Figma, Zillow, Booking.com, and Expedia. Recently, an Apple Music app was integrated, allowing users to discover new music, build playlists, and manage their music collections seamlessly within the ChatGPT environment.
The GPT Store is a marketplace for customized versions of ChatGPT, which the company calls simply "GPTs." It features chatbots designed by OpenAI's partners and third-party developers in the broader tech community that can do everything from giving laundry advice to helping with math homework or pet-related questions.
