As of 9:00 a.m. ET, user reports of outages on the platform had dwindled to around 200, a sharp decline from the high of nearly 10,800 earlier, based on data from the monitoring site Downdetector. In the UK, complaints fell to about 70 from over 3,000, and Canada saw a swift return to normal service, according to the site, which aggregates outage data from various user submissions.
Downdetector's records show the problems began approximately
at 5:00 PM IST. Reports surged quickly, hitting a maximum around 7:00 PM, with
over 3,800 issues in India and more than 10,000 in the US. Users in Canada and
the UK also experienced comparable interruptions. Of the affected individuals,
54% cited "server connection" problems, 35% had issues with the
website directly, and about 11% could load the site but encountered ongoing
"playback error" notifications while trying to watch videos.
The outage hit desktop users hardest, with many unable to
access the site at all. Mobile apps worked somewhat for some, though they were
notably slow. Tech analysts pointed to the "502 Bad Gateway" error as
evidence of a communication failure between the core servers and regional
content delivery networks.
As the service faltered, the hashtag #YouTubeDown quickly
gained traction on X (formerly Twitter), where users shared jokes, fixes, and
questions about the extent of the issue. Frustration was high due to the
timing, coinciding with peak hours for news and entertainment consumption.
YouTube has yet to comment on the cause of the outage in
response to inquiries from Reuters.
Note that Downdetector's figures may not fully represent the total impacted users, as they rely on voluntary reports from individuals.
