OpenAI to Retire Classic Voice Mode on macOS in 2026

OpenAI is reworking how voice conversations happen on ChatGPT for Mac. From January 2026, the desktop app will no longer support its older Voice Mode, making way exclusively for the newer Advanced Voice Mode (AVM).

The older system relied on a slow, step-by-step process—speech to text, text to response, then voice output—which often sounded mechanical and delayed. AVM changes that entirely. Built on GPT-4o, it understands and responds to audio directly, allowing faster replies, emotional awareness, and natural interruptions, much closer to real human conversation.

The shift is part of OpenAI’s push to simplify its platform and invest in a single, higher-quality voice experience. AVM also performs better with accents, background noise, and safety controls.

For Mac users, this means keeping the ChatGPT app updated to retain voice features. Some older Macs may struggle with the newer system, but OpenAI says the transition is essential to deliver more lifelike and capable AI interactions
