OpenAI is reworking how voice conversations happen on ChatGPT for Mac. From January 2026, the desktop app will no longer support its older Voice Mode, making way exclusively for the newer Advanced Voice Mode (AVM).
The shift is part of OpenAI’s push to simplify its platform
and invest in a single, higher-quality voice experience. AVM also performs
better with accents, background noise, and safety controls.
For Mac users, this means keeping the ChatGPT app updated to retain voice features. Some older Macs may struggle with the newer system, but OpenAI says the transition is essential to deliver more lifelike and capable AI interactions
