Earlier this month, Google announced that it will bring Gemini AI-powered features to Google Maps. Now, the tech giant has started rolling out Gemini for all navigation modes, including driving, walking, using public transport, and riding two-wheelers.
In a post, the company said Google Maps will use the same
Gemini language and voice preference that is set for the signed-in account and
give you answers based on your precise location preferences. Google also
replaced the multi-coloured microphone icon that sits in the top right with the
Gemini icon.
And while Gemini replaces the old voice commands, you will have to stick to the “Hey Google” hotword to trigger Gemini in Google Maps. Also, like the Gemini-standalone app, users will be able to use it to get information from connected Google services. Now, you can also ask Google Maps about trip-related information like nearby restaurants, parking spaces, EV charging stations and petrol pumps.
Unified Voice Settings Across Google Services
The update will allow users to access Gemini while
navigating by car, on foot, on public transport, or on two-wheelers. Google
said Maps will automatically use the language and voice settings already selected
for the signed-in Google account. With this shift, the familiar multicoloured
microphone icon in Maps has been replaced with the Gemini symbol, which marks
the transition to the new AI assistant.

Although Gemini now powers all voice commands inside Maps, the service still relies on the “Hey Google” hotword for activation. Once triggered, users can request information that draws on data from connected Google services. This includes details related to ongoing trips, such as nearby food outlets, parking locations, EV charging points or fuel stations.
Traffic alerts: Google Maps will now alert users about major
slowdowns, road closures or unexpected delays — even if they’re not using
active navigation for regularly used routes. For now, this is rolling out to
Android users in the US.
Lens with Gemini: Google is enhancing the Lens in Maps experience with Gemini integration. Accessible from the search bar, users can point their camera at a place and start a conversational query about it. The feature is rolling out in the US for both Android and iOS.
