The feature is powered by our custom AI model for fashion

Virtual Apparel Try On tool comes to India

Envisioning how an outfit will look on you while shopping online can be tough, especially during the busy festive season. Now shoppers in India can virtually try billions of apparel listings on themselves, just by uploading a photo.

The feature makes online shopping more personal by letting you try on tops, bottoms, dresses, jackets and even shoes virtually — all by uploading a photo of yourself. The feature is powered by our custom AI model for fashion, which understands both the human body and nuances of clothing, like how different materials fold, stretch and drape on different body shapes. So you can see how a piece of clothing would actually look on you from a single photo of yourself.

To get started, just look for the “try it on” icon on apparel product listings across Google. You can experiment with new styles, share them with friends, bringing the fitting room experience right to your screen.

The timing is interesting. Virtual try-on has slowly become a staple across India’s e-commerce platforms. Myntra’s beauty try-on, for example, helped double conversions on makeup products in three years. Lenskart made 3D eyewear trials mainstream. Nykaa, Ajio, Tata Cliq, CaratLane — each has some version of a “try before you buy” moment.

Google’s pitch is simple: make online shopping feel more personal, reduce the guesswork and — ideally — cut down on returns. And during the festive season, when people are hunting for outfits across weddings, Diwali parties and office events, the tool might just land at the perfect time.

Accessible through the homepage and the 'You' tab on mobile and desktop, Recap aims to give users a year-in-review snapshot similar to offerings on other media platforms. Those who use YouTube Music will also see summaries of their top artists, songs, genres and podcasts, along with an overview of international listening patterns.

Google Try-on feature: What is it

According to Google, the feature uses Google’s custom AI model built specifically for fashion. The model can understand different body shapes, fabric textures and how materials fold or drape when worn. This helps generate a more realistic preview of how an outfit would appear on a person’s body from just a single image. Google suggests good lighting and a full-body photo are for clearer results, but the process remains simple and does not require any special setup.

Bringing the trial room to your screen

With online shopping growing rapidly in India, Google aims to bring the familiar comfort of a fitting room into a digital format. The Virtual Apparel Try On tool blends fashion and AI to create a more intuitive, personalised and engaging shopping experience. Shoppers can try it starting today across supported listings on Google.
